The Transportation and Logistics Hiring Reform Act, S. 1454, introduced by U.S. Senators Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) and Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) hopes to set a national hiring standard for motor carriers through proper registration, insurance and positive safety rating with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
Now, employers do not have a standard way to determine safety ratings and are making hiring decisions with inaccurate information. According to the letter: “S. 1454 creates a clear objective standard for hiring a motor carrier. This provides the industry with greater certainty in their selection of properly vetted carriers, ensuring they will not be considered negligent in their hiring of those carriers.”
IWLA and other industry groups hope this will reduce the number of safety incidents on the road, remove bad drivers from behind the wheel, and create a more deserving impression of truck driving career opportunities.
